The application of the MIL-STD-882 safety standard was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense to eliminate hazards as much as possible and to minimize the risk that these hazards cannot be eliminated. This standard covers the hazards that apply to all infrastructure, including systems, products, devices, and hardware and software, in the design, development, test, production, use, and disposal processes.
The system safety process consists of eight elements: Documentation of System Safety Approach, Identification and Documentation of Hazards, Assessment and Documentation of Risks, Identification and Documentation of Risk Mitigation Measures, Risk Mitigation, Review and Documentation of Risk Mitigation, Acceptance of Risks, and Management of the Life Cycle of Risks.
